TN’s Confidence in Shoulder Returning Following Multiple Dislocations

TN came to Between the Lines with complaints of chronic shoulder pain multiple dislocations since early 2024. The pain and guarding made it difficult for her to complete any overhead activity and to walk with her dogs using her affected arm.

Her goal for Physical Therapy was to control the pain and be able to confidently hold her skiing poles as well as eventually return to rock/wall climbing with confidence in her shoulder. Assessment of her shoulder was largely positive with no obvious signs of soft tissue damage, but TN displayed excessive guarding behaviors to prevent pain and another dislocation.

Treatment was focused on strengthening the shoulder girdle and improving confidence in TN’s shoulder and movement around the joint. Initial emphasis was put on stability of the shoulder joint and performing movements that TN was hesitant to complete because of the perceived risk of re-injury, controlling any potential increases in pain throughout with Dry Needling and Manual Therapy treatments.

Confidence in TN’s shoulder quickly improved in the coming weeks. It did not take long before she felt confident walking with her dogs using her affected arm. While she has had occasional spikes in shoulder pain since starting PT treatment, they have been much more manageable and were quickly brough under control. Additionally, TN’s tolerance for overhead activity and free-hanging have dramatically improved, and she feels confident that she could return to climbing within the near future.
